HIV/AIDS Policy

Since its founding, VUKANI - UBUNTU has been actively engaged in the battle against HIV/AIDS. The NPO has been making an effort to lessen the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on its members, their families, and the communities we are connected to. We work to lessen the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS, promote self-awareness and the prevention of new infections, and help individuals gain access to high-quality care and treatment for the disease.

HIV infection is being treated far better than it ever was, and what was once a death sentence is now simply another chronic condition that can be managed. Due of the widespread tiredness and skepticism around HIV, this has in and of itself produced difficulties. We reaffirm that a thorough and successful response to HIV/AIDS needs a cooperation between all stakeholders as the health burden posed by HIV/AIDS is of such a scale that individual businesses cannot appropriately handle it alone. We think that our reaction to the AIDS crisis has made a substantial contribution to the long-term viability of our company.

Non-discrimination, consultation, inclusion, and fostering full engagement of all stakeholders, according to Vukani - Ubuntu, are important concepts that guide its HIV/AIDS solutions. This HIV/AIDS policy is based on a human rights foundation, which we believe is essential for an effective HIV/AIDS response. It also supports the key responses to the epidemic, including the prevention of new infections, care, support, and treatment for employees and their dependents who are infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS, social investments in the community, management and mitigation of the impact of HIV/AIDS, and management of the epidemic.

Confidentiality

As with any other member who has had or is suffering any other medical or psychological related occurrence, a member who is, or becomes, HIV positive has the right to secrecy and privacy. Employees who are HIV positive are not required to disclose their status to management or anybody else at their company. There is no rationale for requesting applicants to divulge individualized data pertaining to their HIV status. A medical consultation, an HIV test, or the revelation of a known HIV positive status are all used to determine an individual's HIV status. All feasible steps are taken to ensure that this information is kept strictly confidential. Such information is not provided to anybody else within the organization or outside of it without the individual’s express written consent.

Organisation summary statistics, concerning group HIV infection rates and/or other HIV/ AIDS outcomes and HIV/AIDS-related risk behaviours, compiled from individual HIV testing, and/or knowledge, attitude and practice surveys, may be shared with employees while respecting and maintaining the confidentiality of individual responses and results.
